Corporate Responsibility

Corporate Responsibility

Over the past decade mobile phone services enabling unlimited communication between people in different parts of the world have been growing in demand. They have now become a staple of modern life.

As the only mobile phone operator providing a full range of services in all regions of Russia, we have a great responsibility to provide this staple to our family of 62 million subscribers.

But beyond that, we also have a responsibility to society as a whole. That’s why we offer our help where it is needed most, regardless of the effort required. And we recognize that positive change comes through a series of small steps as well as big leaps.

Support for sports

We are committed to supporting sports, not least because the values they embody are our own corporate values: team spirit, the will to win, belief in yourself and the conviction that success comes to those who strive to improve.

For many years we have been associated with the highest-profile national sports events and projects, sponsoring broadcasts and supporting Russia’s national teams. Our most important step was to forge a partnership with the Organizing Committee of the XXII Winter Olympic Games in 2014 in Sochi. We are General Partner of both the Sochi Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games, as well as General Partner to the Russian Olympic and Paralympic teams.

Facts and figures:

The 10th Annual Trust Barometer, conducted by PR company Edelman, shows that a company’s reputation is shaped as much by its social responsibility activities as by its business success or the quality of its products and services.

According to surveys conducted in 22 countries, including Russia and the EU states, people trust the IT and Telecommunications industry more than any other.

In 2004 the Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs created a Social Charter, which defined the principles of social responsibility. More than 200 companies and other organizations, employing 5.5 million people, have now signed the Charter.

We believe it is important to support amateur and children’s sports too, helping to shape the health of the nation and the lifestyle of present and future generations. One of the projects we are most proud of is «The Future Depends on You» championships that we have organized for teams of children from orphanages since 2005. This means as much to us as sponsoring any of the world’s major events.

Irina Likhova, Director of Human Resources

“In their pursuit of profit and their struggle for a leading position, many companies forget that their main goal should not just be good financial results. We at MegaFon strive to help people and make them happier – not because we have to, but because we simply cannot imagine a different approach.”

Environmental projects and initiatives

MegaFon is at the forefront of technological progress, but we also do all we can to preserve the environment. We chose green as our corporate color because it represents growth, strength, beauty, health and vitality, and symbolizes responsibility and respect for nature — a principle shared by our employees, customers and partners.

We embody this principle not just in our approach to mobile communications, but in our daily actions — a series of small things that collectively have a big impact — such as reducing the amount of paper we use in our offices.

For several years we have organized environmental action days called «Green Saturdays», when our employees and subscribers in dozens of cities in Russia clean up the areas around them — planting trees, improving parks and picking up litter. Every year these events attract more and more people.

We are also involved in large-scale environmental projects. For example, together with the Organizing Committee for the XXII Winter Olympic Games in 2014 in Sochi, we are developing long-term environmental initiatives to preserve the unique nature of South Russia.

Unlimited potential

As a national telecommunications operator, our mission is to remove the barriers to communication. Unfortunately, these barriers are not just technical. Some are social, such as the continuing prejudice against people with disabilities.

It’s sad but true that we still need to convince many people that those with disabilities are equal members of our society. It’s tragic but undeniable that an environment of equal opportunities is still work in progress.

In late 2009, as Russia celebrated International Paralympic Day, MegaFon was proud to become General Partner of the XI Paralympic Winter Games in Sochi in 2014, and General Partner of Russia’s Paralympic team.

But big partnerships are worth no more than important smaller initiatives, which is why we are also determined to reach our target of every single one of our shops and sales offices being equipped with ramps and other forms of mobility access for the disabled.
